Kids Cavity Prevention Guide
Most cavities are built by routine, which means prevention can be built by routine too.
A strong prevention plan combines home care, diet, fluoride, sealants, and routine pediatric dental visits. The goal is to make healthy habits realistic for busy families.
Daily home care
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss where teeth touch. Younger children usually need hands-on help from a parent.
- Use a tiny smear of toothpaste for very young children and a pea-sized amount when age-appropriate
- Floss once teeth touch side by side
- Brush before bed so teeth are clean overnight
Snacks and drinks
Frequency matters. Sipping or snacking all day keeps teeth exposed to cavity-causing acids for longer.
- Choose water between meals
- Keep juice and sweet drinks limited
- Pair treats with meals instead of grazing throughout the day
Professional prevention
Cleanings, fluoride, sealants, and X-rays when needed help Dr. Tiana catch risk early and protect hard-to-clean teeth.
- Cleanings and exams every six months for most children
- Fluoride treatment based on age and cavity risk
- Sealants for cavity-prone molars when appropriate
